Lifestyle Floors have really started to do what they set out to do. Ok you could say they have maybe gone over the top with their stands, and maybe have missed the mark with some ranges put they still have many great ranges that seem to sell well. When the Lifestyle floor was launched, I for one was not giving it much hope and felt it was not going to be around long. but they have done well and to be honest the stands do look great in our shop.

It looks like wool, feels like wool but is polypropylene and there for bleach cleanable.
Many customers are turned off by polypropylene because it can sometimes give a slight Shinney appearance (after all it is plastic). But Wooltex changes this and gives you a more natural wool look.

The Many Different Types Of Carpet

For many years, I thought carpet was just carpet. It goes on the floor; it keeps your feet warm and feels nice. That’s about it, isn’t it? Well, no, not really. You see, there are many different types of carpets (wool, nylon, polyester,…) all of which have been developed over time, some going way back to six thousand years BC. I’ll spare you the history lesson, only to say we’ve known about the benefits of laying carpets on our floors for many thousands of years.
These days, we can choose from a multitude of materials, and a whole rainbow of colours and patterns. Computers, robots and graphics designers can weave intricate patterns in minutes using CAD, and you can even have your own designed weaved into carpet if you wish. That’s technology for you.
So what are all these new fancy carpets made of? Well, a variety of materials as it happens, some more expensive and better than others, but all of them make good comfortable carpets for residential use, or for commercial carpets or contract carpets.
The most popular is probably nylon. It is fairly inexpensive, has excellent wear characteristics, and can be coloured and printed on easily. Nylon carpets are probably the most common on the market today, but a disadvantage is they tend to stain easily because they possess dye sites on the fibres. The cost of nylon tends to fluctuate with the price of oil, as it is a petroleum-based product.
Another type of carpet is polyester, or otherwise known as polyethylene terephthalate. Polyester unlike nylon does not have dye sites, so it is more stain-resistant. However, it is not as soft and luxurious as most other types of carpet, and is typically used for commercial carpets or mid to low prices carpets.
An inexpensive material is polypropylene. This is mostly used because it is inexpensive. On the down side it is difficult to dye and does not wear as well as nylon. Makers of polypropylene carpets compensate by making carpets with smaller loops, and this makes them wear very well, making them suitable for areas with heavy traffic. You can also make outdoor grass carpets with polypropylene.
Acrylic carpets came onto the market in the 1940’s and have come a long way since their first introduction. Rather than using strands that degraded easily, they have been developed to be harder wearing and stronger. Acrylic is usually colour-fast, and they have the feeling of wool, making it an ideal material for making rugs.
Finally, wool carpets are best known for their luxurious feel, and are used almost entirely on the domestic market. Wool is extremely durable, and luckily there is no shortage of sheep willing to give up their fleeces, so it’s quite abundant. Even so, it is fairly expensive compared to the other types of carpet, especially when combined with synthetic fibres to make it stronger and more durable. Most wool carpets today are a mixture of 80% wool and 20% synthetic fibre.

Dutch Company Integrates LED Wayfinding Into Its Carpets. LEDs tucked into Lama Concept’s Cell+LED carpet create customizable lighting where people look the most — on the ground.
Normally, we don’t see loads of innovation in the carpet industry — how much can you really do with a bunch of thread that exists only to be stepped on? — but Holland’s Lama Concept has managed to produce something pretty fresh: Cell+LED, a carpet that doubles as a customizable wayfinding system.

That probably doesn’t sound that impressive, since folks are used to seeing illuminated carpeting just about everywhere. The difference here is that Lama’s lights are planted directly into the carpet. What’s more, the latest version — to be released this year — will feature RGB LEDs, which, at the press of a button, can be customized to assume any pattern or color.

So what you end up with is a flexible series of wayfinders limited to the spot where people naturally look when they walk: the floor. It makes perfect sense for industries that need to be able to herd crowds, but not always in the same way — airplanes, for instance. You could have one pattern that guides passengers onto the plane; another to signal when it’s safe to move around the cabin; another to flash the airline’s logo; still another for emergency situations; and so on.

Some might argue that turning the carpet into a sort of utilitarian light show would confuse passengers, though that’s hard to imagine if the patterns and color schemes are distinct from one another. Think: No one mistakes a green traffic light for a red one.

Not surprisingly, the earliest version of Cell+LED Airbus debuted at the Paris Airshow in the business class of the hotly anticipated Airbus A350, (which isn’t even scheduled to fly until 2013). The rugs have also been featured in the Land Rover concept car LRX, and incorporated into corporate, public, and residential spaces.

How many people think about carpet underlay on a regular basis? I for one don't. I think the only time people ever think about carpet underlay is when you are laying new carpet. The exception to this would obviously be if you work in the carpet business!
So, what do we non carpet workers know about underlay? If you are anything like I was a couple of weeks ago, then probably not much. Though once you've been thrust into the depths of home renovation, you'll most likely get a fair understanding like I have.
So I'm going to share some of my new found carpet padding (that's another word for it) knowledge with the rest of you folks.
First and foremost; what is carpet underlay?
Well you know how when you're walking on your carpet at home it feels kind of spongy? That spongy feeling is the carpet underlay! It's basically a layer of material (we'll get into what the material is made of later), that is laid directly onto your floor, regardless of whether it is a concrete slab or wooden floorboards, and then your actual carpet is laid over top.
Why do we need carpet underlay?
There are a few good reasons why every home should have carpet cushioning (yes, it's another word for it). I'll tell you about the most important ones.
Insulation
By adding the extra layer to your floors you not only help trap the heat in your home but you also help dull those sound waves so your rooms aren't so noisy. So you get two types of insulation with the same piece of underlay, heat and sound insulation!
Comfort
For some people this isn't a very important factor, but for me it is a major bonus! I'm the sort of girl who spends quite a lot of time on the floor. I like lying on the floor in the lounge room in front of the fire place, or doing yoga in front of the TV. So spongy carpet is definitely a good thing!
Have you ever tried lying on the floor in your office at work? I'm a little ashamed to say I have... it's not what you think; I was trying to stretch my back not take a sneaky nap. But you'll notice a difference in the comfort levels. The carpeted floor at work is hard, that's because most work places don't have carpet underlay, or if they do, it's that industrial grade stuff which is useless for lying on!
Carpet Protection
Yes, even though it's underneath your carpet, it is actually protecting it. You see that spongy-ness that makes your carpets so comfy to lay on actually serves a more practical purpose. It allows your carpet to spring back when weight is applied; weight such as people walking all over it and furniture placed on top of it.
Have you noticed when you move your furniture around there are always indentations where it used to sit? Well your carpet underlay will help to push out those dents and bring your carpet back to its usually flat state.
So there you have it, three pretty great reasons to use carpet underlay!

Buying a carpet: Carpet styles

There are a variety of surface texture options available, all of which affect the appearance, feel and importantly performance of your carpet.

By and large, the more luxurious the surface, the more care it will need. Shorter pile usually wears better than long pile carpet but is not as luxurious. It all comes down to personal taste and room usage. The most common styles are:

Twist piles - These have a coarse, rugged finish

Velvet pile - Have a smooth luxurious appearance, rather like suede.

On a like for like basis the only difference between these is aesthetic.

Loop pile - These replicate the look of natural flooring such as coir and sisal. A tip here is that cats and anything with long claws are not a good idea with loop pile carpet.

Saxony - Has a deep pile with a pronounced sensuous feel. Popular in bedrooms they do flatten so are not recommended in heavy traffic areas

Patterned carpet - Usually has a smooth velvet surface with excellent appearance retention

The bedroom is about unadulterated luxury and a nice deep pile will bring the ultimate softness to your toes. Bedrooms are not as prone to thousands of foot steps as the main areas of the home, so you can afford to use a slightly less dense carpet and hence save a bit of money over dining and living rooms.

Remember that most of the time you are going to have bare feet or be in those worn out, but too-comfortable-to-chuck-away slippers so wear and tear is minimal. And apart from the odd cup of tea to kick-start your day, stains from food and drink won’t be such a problem.

Don’t forget that spare bedrooms get even less use and so can make do with a more cost effective, lower density pile than main bedrooms.

General berber information

Berbers are always popular with the carpet buying public. The style is one of loops formed by the yarn that makes up berbers construction. Berbers are perceived to be a wool carpet, being somehow inherently aesthetically suited to natural textiles.
Whilst the carpet construction is attributed to "Berbers", a nomadic tribe idigenous to north Africa, this is not strictly true! Berber carpets as made by "Berbers" were more like multi-coloured axminsters.

Man made berbers

Berbers are made from man made fibres as well as wool. Polypropylene is the main textile because it simulates woolen colours much more accurately than nylon (more popular Stateside).
This brings the price of berbers right down. Polypropylene berbers look and feel somewhat contrived and "caustic" unless they have some wool mixed in with them (at least 20%). Polypropylene berbers are more suitable for letting properties and offices where feel is less important than practicality.

The debate over which is better, carpet or hardflooring, hardflooring or carpet remains a highly sensitive, yet very topical, subject for both commercial and residential markets alike.
Articles in early 2004 appeared in four leading UK national newspapers headlining accidents on hardflooring have increased by over 300% in the last five years (research carried out by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents – RoSPA – February 2004). This may have focused attention on one aspect of choosing floorcovering but there are many other benefits when specifying carpet over hard floor covering.

The Benefits of Choosing Carpet

The benefits derived from selecting good quality carpets in any type of application are manifold: what other type of floorcovering will provide sound insulation, energy savings, underfoot comfort, a safe, non-slip floor, and be easy to clean and install, with good wear and non-allergenic properties, while still providing the consumer with the flexibility for individual creative design?

Sound Insulation

Noise pollution in houses can have a serious effect on the wellbeing of all its users and in this respect a fitted carpet plays an important role virtually eliminating impact noise through sound absorption.
Therefore the use of carpet enhances sound absorption, and the conduction of impact noise can be reduced by up to 30dB, as opposed to comparative values for smooth floorcoverings which lay between 5-15dB.
For example, the benefits of noise reduction can be felt throughout the house. In particular, in flats and on first/second floors when noise of hard flooring can be heard most by people on lower floors.

Energy Saving

Carpets can make a measurable contribution to retaining the warmth in a room and therefore saving energy. Carpets have low heat conduction and are natural thermal insulators creating a heat barrier.
As a result, as much as 10% of the heat in a room which would be dissipated with smooth floorcovering is retained in the room by the carpet.
This, combined with the outstanding underfoot comfort of a carpet, can result in a considerable reduction in the use of heating in the transition from a warm to a cold season. It has been estimated that up to 30 days heating can be saved, resulting in an energy saving of around 4-6% and a consequent reduction in heating bills.

Safety

Safety covers two aspects – reduced slippage, especially when wet, and a decrease in stress on joints The soft resilient fibres of a carpet provide a cushioning effect and excellent orthopedic properties.
The underfoot safety of carpets is an important feature, both in the home and the workplace. Infants and the elderly in particular benefit from the non-slip aspects of carpets and, in the event of a fall, the soft resilience of the carpet lowers the risk of injury.

Health

With their superb dust-trapping properties, carpets are conducive to a healthy living environment. Dust settles quickly and is then securely held by the pile fibres of the carpet until it is vacuumed again.
The dust is not disturbed by incoming air draughts, and this means that the dust content of the indoor air is kept low. This is particularly important since dust particles also act as carriers for germs, allergens and other air contaminants.
Allergies due to carpeting are unknown. The myth that carpets promote dust-mite allergies is untrue, because these are attributable to the faeces of the house-dust mite – the actual allergen itself. Bedding and bed linen contain up to 70% more house-mites than carpets. Regular vacuuming and cleaning, together with adequately ventilated and dry rooms, means that it is virtually impossible for a carpet to contain, entrap or transmit allergens.
